Healthcare IT Applications for Radiology, Cardiology, Pathology Featured at RSNA
San Diego, CA – November 27, 2004 New Smart Client technology for RIS/PACS will be highlighted in a presentation at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Smart Client will be featured in the presentation “What’s New at DR Systems,” by Murray Reicher, M.D., co-founder and chairman of the company.
Smart Client is a “best of both worlds” technology that combines the advantages of “thick-client” computing and “thin-client” computing. In thick client computing, applications reside on local desktop computers. Thin client means that applications live on a Web server.
Thick-client computing enjoys such advantages as robust application speed, computing power, and functionality. Thin-client computing is known for its ease of deployment, the convenience of automatically updating applications software on all computers in a network, and a modest hardware and software footprint.
- Smart Client technology uses web services to blend the advantages of both computing approaches. DR Systems’ Smart Client approach:
- Enables automatic updating of software applications in the RIS/PACS. This saves the IT department from having to make manual software updates, while ensuring that users always have the latest version of software on the central server.
- Enables users to work with Web-sourced data with the full functionality of their local computer, even while off-line. This is an important advantage for remote users such as referring physicians.
- Avoids thin-client drawbacks of poor user experience and computing bottlenecks in the network.
- Facilitates data exchange between desktop applications and server-based applications.
“The ability to deploy this system remotely, using all the power of our doctors’ local computers, has made a huge difference for us,” said Ron McCarthy, PACS administrator at Borgess. “One of our remote reading sites is in Greenwich, Conn., which is 730 miles away. Yet the doctor there and doctors at every one of our sites can be highly productive, even when they’re offsite, thanks to this technology. This has been extremely helpful in our efforts to recruit more radiologists.”
“At DR Systems, we’re always striving to offer the most efficient, comprehensive technology solution for our customers, not just from a medical standpoint but also a management and financial point of view,” said Murray Reicher, M.D., co-founder and chairman of DR Systems. “Smart Client technology is central to that approach. It ends the debate about whether to go with a thick-client or thin-client PACS. Our RIS/PACS delivers the best traits of each, plus the proven results that have been a DR Systems hallmark since our founding 12 years ago.”
DR Systems was recently ranked the #1 PACS vendor in a survey of user satisfaction involving 10 vendors conducted by MD Buyline, a leading healthcare intelligence firm. The company received the highest overall ranking among 10 top vendors in the medical imaging marketplace for PACS.
