DR Systems to Showcase New RIS/PACS Feature at HIMSS Meeting

SAN DIEGO – DR Systems, named the top healthcare IT vendor by the prestigious KLAS® rating service, will demonstrate a variety of new features for its Unity™ RIS/PACS during the upcoming HIMSS ’07 Annual Conference and Exhibition.
The San Diego-based company, which KLAS also rated the nation's top PACS company, will:
• Demonstrate its new Patient Link™ capability, which is designed to help hospitals and imaging centers consolidate patient records, without requiring the customary, time-consuming and expensive creation of an enterprise master patient index (EMPI).
• Show examples of its capability to migrate significant amounts of data from a legacy PACS to a new DR Systems PACS.
• Present how the DR Systems PACS is accessible from electronic medical records (EMR) and health information system (HIS) web portals.
Data migration is an area of expertise for DR Systems. With data migration, historical exams from a previously installed PACS are transferred onto a newly installed PACS.
Data migration also is becoming increasingly important as PACS become more common. Studies have shown that up to one-quarter of current PACS users plan to change vendors—a task made challenging by the large size of the radiological image files involved.
Also at HIMSS, Alberto Kywi, chief information officer for Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA, will deliver a related podium presentation. His talk, "Navigating the RHIO Universe: Overcoming the Political and Technical Challenges," discusses technology from DR Systems and others used to create a regional health information organization (RHIO).
Kywi’s talk will be presented as Education Session No. 95 under the Community Health Initiatives heading, in room 353 at 2:15 pm-3:15 pm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007.
RHIOs are IT networks that enable the electronic sharing of patient-specific information, including lab tests and radiological images, among healthcare institutions. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has been a leader in establishing one of the first RHIOs.
DR Systems will be in Booth 1845 during the meeting, which runs from Feb. 25 through March 1 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
