DR Systems Adds Smart Client Technology to RIS/PACS
San Diego, CA – November 27, 2004 -- Advanced healthcare IT applications for radiology, cardiology and pathology are featured by DR Systems at this year's RSNA. DR Systems is the leading independent provider of imaging and information management solutions for hospitals and imaging centers.
Among new applications is Release 7, the latest upgrade of the company's technology, which incorporates cardiology tools; "auto pull” of cases and reports; improved radiology information system (RIS) interfaces, and expansion of mammography reading.
"Release 7 is the most sophisticated deployment yet of our commitment to provide an enterprise-wide solution -- with the economic savings and efficiencies that only a unified product can offer," said Murray Reicher, M.D., chairman and cofounder of DR Systems. "Many other companies have acquired disparate RIS and PACS companies, resulting in systems that were never designed to operate together. DR's best-of-breed approach, by comparison, leads the way with a cost-effective, single-company solution for universal image and information management."
Also new from DR Systems at RSNA:
- Integration of cardiology PACS and pathology image distribution into DR Systems' RIS/PACS.
- PACS Report Card, a benchmark report to help hospitals and imaging centers measure their expectations against what has been achieved by DR Systems customers.
- Diagnostic reading of digital mammography images, for which the company was among the first to receive FDA clearance.
- Smart Client technology, combining the best of thin and thick client approaches.
DR Systems' integration of cardiology PACS provides both clinical and information-technology advantages.
“The biggest value from an IT standpoint is that I can access these images or case studies from anywhere in the hospital or outside the hospital. In addition, we no longer have to look for missing films or CDs," said Doug Harrigan, RT, senior technologist for cardiology at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego. "It’s made a substantial difference in my use of time during the day. I would say its cut out at least a half-hour each day.”
Among booth presentations at RSNA will be the "PACS Report Card" study by Evan Fram, M.D. He will provide an in-depth look at five DR Systems customers demonstrating that the company’s PACS has dramatically improved the efficiency of the diagnostic imaging operation at each hospital.
DR Systems’ PACS enabled each of the five hospitals to become at least 91 percent filmless. Projected annual dollar savings on film costs for all five were significant -- as much as $1.7 million at one medical center.
In another new development, integrating the diagnostic reading of digital mammogram images further enhances the productivity advantages of DR Systems RIS/PACS. “It’s clearly to the benefit of a healthcare institution to have mammography integrated into its RIS/PACS," said Dr. Reicher. "This new capability allows our existing and future customers to fully integrate digital mammography into their PACS network, eliminating the stand-alone mammography islands that exist today."
Dr. Reicher will outline Release 7 and the new digital mammography-reading capability in daily presentations at the DR Systems booth #6533, in Hall B, North Building, Level 3.
Smart Client technology will also be featured in Dr. Reicher's presentation. Smart Client provides the best of both worlds, combining the advantages of “thick-client” computing and “thin-client” computing.
Thick-client computing enjoys such advantages as robust application speed, computing power, and functionality. Thin-client computing is known for its ease of deployment, the convenience of automatically updating applications software on all computers in a network, and a modest hardware and software footprint.
Smart Client technology uses web services to blend the advantages of both computing approaches.
DR Systems was ranked the #1 PACS vendor in an October 2004 survey of user satisfaction involving 10 vendors conducted by MD Buyline, a leading healthcare intelligence firm.
