"Mammography is an effective method of detecting breast cancer. Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) has been shown to be equal or superior to analog film mammography. Dedicated mammography workstations often are bundled with digital mammography machines. But picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) have matured to become a viable option to evaluate digital breast images. As FFDM advances and healthcare IT systems integrate, benefits to mammography on PACS are emerging. These include cost savings of bypassing acquisition of dedicated mammography workstations; savings in utilizing existing reporting, exam distribution, and archival technology; increased efficiency in reading images from multiple modalities on 1 workstation; space savings; and improvements to workflow efficiency."
